La Llorona

Trick or treat, girls and ghouls?!! In honor of this recently passed Halloween and Dia de los Muertos, I give you an outfit inspired by a spooky piece of local folklore - La Llorona.

As children in the southwestern desert, we are told the story of a beautiful young woman drowning her children in the river, driven mad by heartache and grief. Realizing her grave mistake, she wanders the edges of the river calling out her children’s names and crying into the wind. La Llorona - Spanish for “The Wailing Woman” - is said to haunt the acequias and arroyos of the southwest to this day, wailing and searching eternally for her drowned children on the banks of the old rivers at night. Some say she even kidnaps children who are unlucky enough to be alone after dark, hoping in vain to soothe her tortured soul. Traditionally, La Llorona appears as a thin, skeletal apparition in a long white dress. Many swear that if you pay close attention on a quiet night in the heart of the desert, you might catch a glimpse of her white gown floating through the juniper trees, or hear her mournful cries on the evening winds.

And now, in my own personal brand of desert-native style, La Llorona:

Dress - For Love and Lemons (forloveandlemons.com), Felt Floppy Hat - American Apparel (store.americanapparel.net), Cat-Eye Sunnies - Cheap Monday (cheapmonday.com), Wedges - Jessica Simpson via Macy's (macys.com), Slip Skirt (underneath) - Nasty Gal (nastygal.com), Bondage Bra (underneath) - SKIVVIES by For Love and Lemons (forloveandlemons.com), Feather and Fleur de Lis Charm Bangles - Alex and Ani (alexandani.com)

In addition to interpreting one of my favorite local myths, this outfit post also marks the official end of the Blonde Era. My breakup with blonde was distinctly bittersweet and definitely monumental! I rocked the flaxen locks as my signature for almost as long as I can remember, and I don't think it would be an over exaggeration if I said I was devastated to see them go [more on THAT rant to come]. But - on the flip side - it was time for a change and now my hair and I are looking forward at a bold, bright new future ;) For those of you who are in-the-know about my newest color choice, stay tuned for a special post on how we made the switch! For the rest of you - I can't wait for the big reveal! I'm dreaming up tons of new looks and and a totally new vibe for winter. And let's not forget, my favorite... Party Season!!!

Get ready for new horizons and the holidays in the neon desert - Happy November :)

They Only Want You When You're Seventeen

It's easy to cling to summer fever in the desert. Warm days and cold nights equal endless opportunity for my favorite activity: layering. Nothing is more satisfying than piling knits, pairing tights with socks, adding a see-through sweater, a funky jacket... I could go on. So - I'm in easing in slow. Because I simply refuse to stash my summer sale scores for the winter just yet, I'm beefing up my shear layers for the occasional chill and my next few posts will feature outfits sneaking their way into fall with my favorites from my end-of-summer blowout.

Bait Dress - UNIF, Turquoise Lace Un-Lined Bra - Victoria's Secret, Black Slip Skirt - Nasty Gal, Black Fishnet Tights - Urban Outfitters, Greyscale Mixed Media Booties - Sacha London, Reflective Sunnies - Le Specs.

After I scored the cult-coveted Bait Dress at the Nasty Gal End-of-Summer Sale, I couldn't resist taking it out to play a little ;) As a result, I decided to do this series on easing your summer pieces into fall. For those of us clinging to late summer, the trick is to choose more substantial footwear and add sheer layers in heavier textures and darker colors - i.e. fishnets + slouchy knit socks paired with grey suede/mixed texture booties with a chunky heal and platform toe. I love a dark lip for fall; a bold, dark color that compliments your accessories can easily tie a look together even if you're experimenting with psychedelic colors and outlandish patterns. And eyewear? For me, the upcoming season is all about statements. These round blue babies with reflective lenses from Le Specs - another gem and instant favorite from the Nasty Gal end-of-summer Sale - are simply too delicious for me to put away for fall. Reflective lenses = stealing my heart so fast, Le Specs = OBSESSED, if you're looking for rad shades, Le Specs has absolutely got the coolest frames and colors around. This is only the beginning of a beautiful relationship I plan to cultivate well into winter ;)
