Casual Clutch

Lazy weekend wearing 80's - era vintage black slides + clutch, Gap Men's XXL Breast-Pocket T-shirt, American Apparel Metallic Cropped Cardigan in gold, 7 for All Mankind Cuffed Jean Shorts, Cheap Monday Rounded Cat-Eye Sunnies, + lips in MAC Matte Lipstick in Lady Danger = Va Va Voom <3

Add edge to basic looks by picking pieces in novelty shapes, sizes, and textures - like this oversized grey tee paired with a chunky metallic knit. Create continuity and pull the outfit together by choosing accessories in a contrasting accent color, in this case black. Still need some extra oomph? Adding a bold lip color a la Gwen Steffani will put the polish on any look.

My personal tip - try the men's section! When I get bored with soft lines and feminine curves, I ditch the ladies and go for guys ;) Take a cue from Courtney Love and borrow your boyfriend's biggest tees and coziest flannels to look like a rockstar without even trying.

Beauty Box Favorites

Since conceptualizing and creating this blog, my research has led me to troll the Internet for the best in fashion and beauty in recent months. I’ve been collecting ammo for my makeup arsenal that has inspired me to re-vamp favorites and introduce new themes into my daily looks. Here, I have compiled a list of my personal favorite beauty trends and products accompanied by a few tips and tricks on how to stay current and get the most out of your makeup.

FAVORITE LOOKS

Opaque Purple Lips

Go high-drama in bold, saturated purples - be a late-night-temptress in darker hues, or choose a bright, zany shade with a matte finish for a more eccentric look. However you want to rock it, purple is it for lips!

Sheer Wet Gloss

Embrace the last days of summer with soaking-wet lips in delicate, feminine shades that will make you feel free as a flower.

from left - Aveda Nourish-Mint Rehydrating Lip Glaze in Pink Lotus, Agave Nectar, and Ginger Lily,
M-A-C Lipglass in Pink Poodle.

Complicated Neutrals

Be a contradiction in bold shapes and high doses of minimalist shades. Play in endless combinations with any of the three fabulous Naked palettes, all chock-full of fun and unexpected, barely-there colors. My favorite:

Naked2 Palette, Urban Decay

Rose-Colored Eyelids

Make blue eyes pop, green eyes feisty, or brown eyes smolder with a palette of saturated pinks and browns. Vamp it up a notch with the addition of heavy shading and complimentary liner.

TIPS/TRICKS/TRIMMINGS

Brows

As I’ve been watching the runways swarming with voluptuous Audrey-Hepburn brows for several seasons now, I’ve developed a case of thick-eyebrow-envy. Back when thin eyebrows reigned, I always felt as if I had won the genetic lottery. The last few years, however, have destroyed my eyebrow-ego and forced me to pick up some new brow-tricks to enhance the situation. So, for the wasp-y girl with inadequate eyebrows, here’s how to boost what your mamma gave you:

Use a brow-color pencil or wax-based brow color to add volume + thickness and adjust brow shape, then polish with a brow brush + set with clear gloss.

I like the consistency and control of the small angled brush and 2-color palette of the Eyebrow Kit from e.l.f. Studio. It’s inexpensive, user-friendly, and I find that the wax-based formula affords more specificity and staying power than a traditional brow pencil. Plus - no more yelling in exasperation at the pencil sharpener :D

Primer

Don’t get caught with color running all over your face! Your look will go from stunning to sloppy in 5 seconds flat if you don’t use the right makeup tools. In order to keep your beauty creations intact, you have 2 choices:

1) Spend all day running to the ladies’ room, fussing with your makeup, and looking generally un-cool and overly high maintenance,

OR

2) Invest in primer, for the love of god!

Personally I prefer the Urban Decay Original Primer Potion; color stays bright and everything remains exactly where I put it even through hours of sweat and other rough conditions. If you want your look to stay clean and sharp all day, eye shadow primer is a must!

Highlighter

Run immediately to pick up a tube of Watt’s Up, Soft Focus Highlighter from Benefit – one of my all-time FAVORITE products and personal beauty must-haves; I rarely leave home without a slick or two of Watt’s Up. It blends magically, creates natural-looking definition, and adds just the right amount of shine.  Makes me feel instantly glamorous and ready-to-rock even when I have T-5 seconds to be out the door.

--------------> On special occasions: Glamour Dust glitter pigment from Too Faced – because girls just want to have fun ;) I like Blue Angel for an ice queen vibe.

-------------> Farmer's Market

New-wave tribal meets early-90s casual today for lazy shopping. This dress is one of my favorite easy pieces for summer: drop sleeves and an all-over loose fit make for a breezy day and pair perfectly with sexy skivvies peaking out the sides.

Amp up the nostalgia-factor with glittery neon jellies and a bright monochrome bag in a contrasting color. I picked up this buttery turquoise cross-body in Paris circa 2011 from duo designers Pampa & Pop and it has yet to be de-throned as my go-to, all-purpose bag. Perfect for the ethical fashionista, Pampa & Pop is a fair trade company that makes funky, colorful leathers and promotes human rights and a more ethical fashion industry. They use mostly raw materials from Argentina, plus organic cotton, biodegradable ink, and other goodies. Activism meets Narcissism ;) See? You can have your cake and eat it too.

Dress - vintage, Jellies - JuJu, Turquoise Leather Cross-Body Bag - Pampa & Pop, Large Yellow Bangle - 60's-era vintage, Other Bangles - thrift store and street market finds, Sunnies - UO.

Reppin'

Playing dress-up in the mysterious and invariably silly underbelly of my closet for today's outfit and pulling gems from way-back-when.

Alumni reppin' in "Ithaca is Gorges" Tee circa 2012, Skirt - A&F circa 2004, Leather cross-body bag - Pampa & Pop circa 2011, Sequined magenta sneaks - UO circa 2008.

+ ------------> ankle socks updating the sneaks, furry vest for a dash of Kate-Hudson-style-band-aid to pull in the tie-dye tee, ultra-reflective aviators for the cool factor, and neutral scrunchie for the 90's-style cherry on top ;)
