Outdoor Disco - Pt. 2

GOLD SCHOOL

In the second installment of my sequin-tastic shoot with Jamison, I'm layering some of my favorite gold and black party pieces for a little late-night cowgirl vibe. The obvious show steeler is a vintage gold and black sequined jacket that I purchased at an adorable and fantastic vintage shop in Ithaca, NY, called Petrune. When I was in school there I used to troll the racks on a regular basis for a little nostalgic oomph in my outfits. Check them out at petrune.com  if you dig the charming and unique :)

The LBD underneath is also one of my favorite pieces - in black velvet with a bustier bodice, it's sexy on its own and great for layering. From American Apparel, the brand that never fails to disappoint with quality basics. Quick closet inventory reveals all of my most-worn, anytime pieces are American Apparel, and I can solidly get behind products made sweatshop free in the USA. Plus, everything goes with their everything - you could probably say I'm a fan ;) store.americanapparel.net

Outdoor Disco - Pt. I

I recently had the pleasure of shooting with my life-long friend and extremely talented photographer, Michael Jamison, near the beautiful and tiny town of Clifton Forge, VA. Typically he shoots mesmerizing nature close-ups, travel photos, and standard portraits, but with some sweet talk I persuaded him to abandon his usual pursuits for a few hours in lieu of shooting my personal favorite frivolous subject (next to faux fur, of course) - SEQUINS!!! After a late start and quickly fleeting sunlight, our shoot turned into a rather more experimental venture than you are used to seeing on this blog. Nevertheless, I am thrilled to present the results of our unusual adventure in a multi-part series entitled "Outdoor Disco," featuring sequined pieces in low light and strange locals. Despite the less-than-favorable conditions, this is one of my favorite blog-projects to date both in process and final product. I hope you enjoy the change of scenery as much as I did!

La Llorona

Trick or treat, girls and ghouls?!! In honor of this recently passed Halloween and Dia de los Muertos, I give you an outfit inspired by a spooky piece of local folklore - La Llorona.

As children in the southwestern desert, we are told the story of a beautiful young woman drowning her children in the river, driven mad by heartache and grief. Realizing her grave mistake, she wanders the edges of the river calling out her children’s names and crying into the wind. La Llorona - Spanish for “The Wailing Woman” - is said to haunt the acequias and arroyos of the southwest to this day, wailing and searching eternally for her drowned children on the banks of the old rivers at night. Some say she even kidnaps children who are unlucky enough to be alone after dark, hoping in vain to soothe her tortured soul. Traditionally, La Llorona appears as a thin, skeletal apparition in a long white dress. Many swear that if you pay close attention on a quiet night in the heart of the desert, you might catch a glimpse of her white gown floating through the juniper trees, or hear her mournful cries on the evening winds.

And now, in my own personal brand of desert-native style, La Llorona:

In addition to interpreting one of my favorite local myths, this outfit post also marks the official end of the Blonde Era. My breakup with blonde was distinctly bittersweet and definitely monumental! I rocked the flaxen locks as my signature for almost as long as I can remember, and I don't think it would be an over exaggeration if I said I was devastated to see them go [more on THAT rant to come]. But - on the flip side - it was time for a change and now my hair and I are looking forward at a bold, bright new future ;) For those of you who are in-the-know about my newest color choice, stay tuned for a special post on how we made the switch! For the rest of you - I can't wait for the big reveal! I'm dreaming up tons of new looks and and a totally new vibe for winter. And let's not forget, my favorite... Party Season!!!

Get ready for new horizons and the holidays in the neon desert - Happy November :)

XOXOXOXOXO

Onesies Revamped

Continuing my series on extending your summer wardrobe into fall, today's post is all about revamping your warm-weather onesies for the transitional-period chill. I've selected two adorable all-in-one pieces - a pinup-style magenta number from UK brand Motel and a sportswear-inspired denim jumpsuit from Chelsea + Violet - and paired them with structured statement jackets for fall. Screw convention! You can make any piece work for any season with a keen eye for detail, at least one updated piece representing a current trend, and on-point accessories. If your wallet's looking too thin for an all-out shopaholic-style haul, splurge for one pair of high quality, on-trend sunglasses and you can update any outfit in five seconds flat. Appropriate sunnies are a must for every new fashion season and keep you looking chic even when your wardrobe looks shabby. Check out my pairings below for inspiration on updating your slight summer finds, featuring accessories from Aldo, American Apparel, Cheap Monday, Kenneth Cole Reaction, and more. <3
